INTERPRETATIONS OF SOIL

TIME: Saturday 14.09.2024 Exhibition Opening at 17.15
VENUE: Køppe Contemporary Objects, Munch Petersen Vej 9, 3700 Rønne
ADMISSION: Free

Myths in different cultures tell us that the first humans were created from soil. The word ‘humus’ has shared roots with the word ‘human’, and christian burial rituals often conclude with variations on ‘Earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust.’ Many contemporary artists reflect on the precarious status of soil and its aesthetic and political implications in works that take on environmental, mythological/narrative and personal issues. Acknowledging both the sculptural and symbolic potential of soil, they construct objects and map and listen to the earth in order to tells its stories and explore the sensuous qualities of soil.
